#FightingForMaya Laundry-to-Landscape Workshop

  • Address to be given on RSVP Ocean Beach, San Diego (map)

About the cause:

This is a very special workshop opportunity to support a very special young girl.  All proceeds from this workshop go toward #FightingForMaya.  Maya's family attends the same school as my kids, and Maya is just a year younger than my oldest son.  In May of 2014, Maya was diagnosed with a rare disease called Atypical TPP1 Deficiency (aka SCAR7).  She is one of a 20 diagnosed in the world.  As such there is currently no cure.  This family, who has done so much for our school community, is now raising funds to support the research necessary to find a cure.

We have #FightingForMaya Fridays where we all put on our T-shirts and post pictures on Facebook to generate interest and traffic to their cause.  I'd like to invite you to join the cause, and simultaneously join another important conversation in our community about water conservation!   This is a 2 for 1 deal!  You get a Hands-On opportunity to install a Laundry Greywater system, and you get to support this family in finding a cure for this beloved young girl.

About Greywater:

When you wash your clothes, do you know where that water goes?  Rather than letting this abundant resource go “down the drain” you can tap into it to sustainably irrigate your fruit trees and other landscape plants, getting your clothes and your conscience clean at the same time!  This hands-on workshop will teach and inspire participants to install their own “Laundry to Landscape” greywater system.Learn how easy it is to use the washing machine to irrigate fruit trees and more with this cheap, easy, and permit-free legal method of greywater reuse. By the end of the day, participants will be able to design and install their own laundry to landscape greywater system with confidence. Cut down your water bill and grow an ecological and food producing garden.  Class will address:

  • Greywater design for laundry systems
  • Mulch basin and soil perk
  • Greywater compatible soaps and detergents
  • Greywater specific parts and tools
  • Fruit and nut trees for greywater

One very excited new aspect to this is there are now Greywater Rebates available for City of San Diego Residents!   So after you spend $500 or less in parts, learn how to install the system yourself (bring your handyman if you won't want to install it yourself), and capitalize on the $150-$250 rebate, your greywater system costs $250 or less!  Now that's a really efficient way to save water and ensure the longevity of your plants despite drought restrictions for outdoor watering.

After 2 years this 8 tree fruit orchard in Normal Heights is well established and healthy thanks to a Laundry-to-Landscape workshop!

When: Saturday, September 10, 9am-1pm.  We will also have a demonstration and discussion session from 1-3 for anyone who would rather skip the hands-on installation

Where: Ocean Beach, address to be given upon RSVP

Cost: Recommended donation of $50-$250 toward #FightingFor Maya.  We will have books, parts, greywater safe soaps available for purchase as well as some #FightingForMaya T-shirts.  If you want to ensure your spot you can order a T-shirt and send me a copy of your order confirmation.  Then make sure to wear your T-shirt on the day!
